The Benefits of Colonics

Posted on 21st February 2012 by Dawn in About Me,Acne

I starting colonic hydrotherapy recently.  I have read about the benefit of colonic hyrdotherapy in several books, but never seemed to find the time to fit it into my schedule.   Plus, I figured I eat healthy, and I live a really clean lifestyle so my liver and colon must be brimming with health as well.

Boy was I wrong!  When I had my first appointment (which I brought both my boys too!  My oldest Anatol thought this was super cool, and he even took a picture of the digestive system on the wall with my phone! :) ) the colon hydro therapists explained to me how toxins can build up in the large and small intestine and what to expect during my treatment.  She also described what I would be seeing coming through this clear tube during my treatment and what it meant.  In the world of colonic hydrotherapy yellowish bile is a sign of a  toxic liver and green bile is a sigh of a toxic gallbladder.  Well….to my shock, I have a very toxic liver.  I asked how can this be?  I had less than five glasses of alcohol last year, I don’t drink coffee, hell I don’t even eat sugar!

Well…after my initial shock it does make sense.  We live in a toxic environment, and when getting colon hydro therapy for the first time your ridding yourself of years of toxic buildup.  I must admit there were times in my life were I did not have the healthiest of lifestyles–I mean who is perfect from birth!

After the session, I felt amazing and signed up for my next session.  It takes about 10 sessions to rid your body of all your accumulated toxins followed by a quarterly maintenance program.  I think that anyone who struggles with skin issues, depression, or digestive issues should consider colonics.

The Power of Green Tea

The Beauty of Green Tea

Great article on New Beauty Blog.  Also, super exciting to see them mention how powerful green tea can be when used in conjunction with LED facial treatments! :)  Here at Skin Logic, we use Eminence Organic Skin Care Green Tea & Guava Fortifying Serum on the skin during our LED treatments–the results are phenomenal!

It seems that every few weeks we read another study about the health benefits of green tea. And here’s this week’s: Elderly people who drink the most green tea (five-plus cups a day) are less likely to suffer “functional disabilities” later in life. In other words, problems with daily living activities like getting dressed or bathing.

This report, published in American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, illustrates the powerful effect the antioxidants in green tea have on preserving cells. When it comes to beauty, healthy cells are paramount. Once cells are damaged, the skin pays the price with dullness, fine lines and sagging. Here are a few of the roles green tea plays in skin health, specifically:

Stops wrinkles: The antioxidants in green tea defend against the oxidative damage that causes wrinkles, discoloration and loose skin. In one green tea study, it was found that used topically in a lotion with light-emitting diode technology (LED) treatments, participants saw a dramatic reduction in wrinkles in just a month.

Heals wounds: Green tea has anti-inflammatory properties and has been used to heal injured skin.

Eases eczema: Drinking green tea helps to moisturize the skin and drinking three cups a day has shown to reduce eczema symptoms.

Boosts metabolism: Consuming green tea will help your body better oxidize fat and drop excess weight by speeding up your metabolism.

Those are enough reasons for us to brew up a cup right now!

High Frequency Skin Care

Posted on 23rd January 2012 by Dawn in Acne,High Frequency

Like most aesthetician’s I have a love affair with equipment.  I’m always excited to go to the shows, or read the latest research on the next big thing that’s touted to transform the skin into flawless perfection.  I mean, who doesn’t want to try and achieve that coveted airbrushed look. :)   So of course I get super excited when I see or read about some new gizmo that’s going to make my face look better than butter cream frosting.

Here’s the thing though, I always end up at the end of the day falling back in love with my old school equipment.  As it is with  my little high frequency machine.  I forget about it for awhile, and it sadly collects dust in my closet until one day I read something (or have a zit that will just not go away) and pull it back out and remember just how grand of a little machine it is.

Why is this little machine so grand you ask?  Well for starters high frequency has been around since 1882–that’s pretty impressive that after all these years high frequency is still a main stay in most aesthetician’s treatment rooms!  These machine’s work by kick starting the skin rejuvenation process.  High frequency:

  • Increases blood circulation
  • Increases collagen
  • Increases elastin
  • Eliminates toxins
  • Kills acne causing bacteria
  • Encourages lymphatic drainage
  • Exfoliates dead skin cells
  • Increases product penetration.
Whew!  That’s a lot of amazingness  for a little machine!  So once again I pull out my high frequency machine, and have high hopes that perhaps it might just stay next to me–at least for a little while. :)

January Detox

Posted on 12th January 2012 by Dawn in About Me

Like most people January is a time for new beginnings and new goals, and with new beginnings and new goals usually comes a detox–well at least for me! :) I always feel that a purified body, is a good representation of a purified mind.

Well…as with most things in life who has time be be slogging down detox pills and shakes while trying to keep up with the daily grind of life–not me!!!  I’m usually rushing out the door in the morning with at least three bags and two kids in tow.  One of which thinks I need to carry him even though I clearly have no free hands–ahhh the joys of motherhood! :)

You can imagine that adding a detox to this would be pushing the boundaries of my sanity.  So I was very excited to learn about the foot detox.  Yes, you can apply a patch to the soles of your feet at night (for 30-days) and detox while you sleep.  I guess it’s some Japanese formulation that pulls toxins out out your body and onto these little patches.  I was so excited! :0

I mean seriously–this is so golden!  No crazy drinks.  No craxy pills I have to remember every three hours.  I’m in heaven.

I’m now officially 3-days into my detox, so I let you know how it goes.  Here is a pic of my first night.  I guess this is pretty good.  I read and have seen pictures of people and their patches are black.  It’ must be all my super green smoothies–heheheh! :)

Great Article On Why You Should Avoid Commercial Detergents

Is Your Detergent Causing Your Breakouts?

Posted Wednesday, December 21, 2011 by Susan Yara, Editorial Video and Interactive Director

It might be time to stop blaming bad genes, hormones or even oily skin for your breakouts. Although, they could be factors, there’s something else you should consider—your detergent.

Although we love the scent of the ocean breeze or freshly mowed grass, detergents that contain heavy fragrances or dyes can often be harsh on the skin. Almost always, they contain synthetic ingredients and they’re not in their purest form. Add in other factors that are already irritating the skin like sensitivity, extreme weather conditions, severe dryness and heat or humidity, and your skin is going to react.

Her solution instead is to use soaps, detergents and even fabric softeners that are free of fragrance and dyes. If you don’t like your clothing to look wrinkled, she says to simply, “Iron with a spray bottle filled with distilled water with one drop of lavender essential oil.”

Another option is to go natural. Use detergents and fabric softeners that don’t contain chemicals that can harm the skin. One to try is Vaska Herbatergent ($10), which contains real lavender and botanical cleaning agents, plus it’s available fragrance-free.

Changes…

Posted on 13th December 2011 by Dawn in About Me,Uncategorized

The past two years have been an amazing adventure for me.  I have fallen on my face, made tremendous mistakes, and have pulled though with a deep understanding of who I am and what I want out of life.

You see 2 years ago I left my marriage and became a single mother, all while trying to traverse the ups and downs of being a small business owner.   I have had moments of great joy followed by moments of great heartache.  During this time, I have watched my business grow, while simultaneously creating some amazing relationships with clients and co-workers.

Also along the way I met the most amazing man.  He was romantic, charming, sensitive, and successful–everything a girl could want.  Yet as my confidence as a business women grew, my confidence of accepting love diminished.

However, with the successes and failures of the past two years, I learned to love and forgive myself.  I have learned that what I perceived as my flaws have become my greatest teachers.  I have learned that in the end the most important gift one can give themselves and the world is to remain positive and optimistic even if in the moment the outcome seems not ideal.  I have also learned to have unbending faith in the power of meditation as a tool to self actualization.

So I end this year with great optimism for the future, and what better way to celebrate my new found love and freedom than with a new hair color! :)  It’s a great symbol for me of the new person I have become, and who I will continue to grown and evolve to be.  So here is to 2012!!! May we all find love, peace and adventure in the new year.

:) Dawn
